 English is the mother
tongue of more than 350 million people worldwide, second only to Mandarin Chinese with 700
million native speakers.
English is the
"official language" to 1400 million people. This is greater than the total
number of speakers because of countries such as India where although the official language
is English, it is spoken by a relative minority.
English has the largest
vocabulary of any language with 490,000 words plus 300,000 technical terms. The 20 volume
Oxford English Dictionary has 21,728 pages.
There are 26 letters in
the English alphabet, including 5 vowels (A, E, I, O, U). There are 47 different spoken
sounds, 22 of them vowel sounds.
